Subfloor Plenum Cleaning for Ashburn Data Centers

Removal of dust, debris and construction residue from the underfloor plenum beneath a raised floor, working around pedestals, stringers and contained cabling with tile removal agreed bay by bay.

Why the plenum matters

If you want the longer explanation of how supply air, perforated tiles and underfloor dust interact, it is in the cleaning standards guide.

In many halls the space under the raised floor is the cold-air supply path. Dust that settles on the slab, the pedestals and the cable containment is picked up by the airflow and carried through the perforated tiles toward the equipment intakes. Construction debris, drywall dust, concrete fines and dropped hardware all end up there, and they stay until someone lifts the tiles.

Scope

The service covers the accessible underfloor area: the slab, pedestal bases and stringers, the outside of cable trays and conduits, and the underside of the panels that are lifted. Loose material is removed with HEPA-filtered vacuums; the slab is then wiped or damp-cleaned where the site permits moisture under the floor. Each lifted bay is inspected, cleaned, and closed before the next one is opened.

Exclusions

We do not move, re-route or clean inside cable bundles, and we do not touch underfloor power whips, leak-detection cable, fire-suppression piping or sensors. If something under the floor looks wrong, such as standing water, damaged containment or an unlabeled cable, we stop and report it rather than work around it.

Access and coordination

Plenum work needs more coordination than any other cleaning task in a data hall. Before we start, we agree the bay-by-bay plan, the maximum number of open tiles at any time, barrier placement, and who on your side authorizes each section. Crews use tile lifters, never pry bars, and tiles go back exactly where they came from.

Products and equipment

Vacuum filtration, cloths and any cleaning agent are approved by the site in advance. Nothing that creates airborne dust, such as compressed air or brushing, is used under the floor.

Scheduling

Plenum cleaning is almost always done in sections across several visits, often paired with raised floor cleaning of the same area so the floor is handled once. After new construction, it belongs inside post-construction cleaning, before the hall goes live.

Request a proposal. The useful inputs are floor area, plenum depth if known, whether the hall is live or still in build, and your tile-lifting rules.

Scope at a glance

  • Slab, pedestal bases, stringers and the outside of containment
  • Bay-by-bay tile removal with an agreed open-tile limit
  • HEPA vacuuming only, no compressed air or brushing
  • Anything unexpected under the floor is reported, not worked around

Questions facilities teams ask

How many tiles do you open at once?

That is set by your facility, not by us. Many sites limit open bays to a handful at a time with barriers around them. The proposal records the limit and the crew works to it.

Can this be done while the hall is live?

Usually yes, in sections and within your change windows, provided the site allows tile lifting in a live hall. Some operators prefer plenum work during a maintenance window; we fit either approach.

What happens if you find water or damage under the floor?

The crew stops, closes the bay, and reports it to your contact with a photo. We do not continue in that section until you say so.
